What is Fragrance Ink?
Fragrance ink is a specialized printing material that incorporates microencapsulated fragrances into the ink formulation. When printed onto paper, plastic, textiles, or other substrates, the scent remains dormant until activated by friction or warmth — releasing a pleasant aroma. This technology creates a powerful multisensory experience by blending visual communication with the sense of smell.
At the heart of fragrance ink are microcapsules — tiny "scent spheres" ranging from a few to tens of microns in diameter. Fragrance oils are enclosed within a polymer shell that remains intact during printing. Only when the printed surface is rubbed, scratched, or exposed to heat do the capsules break, releasing the aroma. This ensures excellent printability while preserving scent longevity.
Key Applications
From high-end fashion magazines to children's books, from luxury packaging to brand marketing collateral, fragrance ink offers brands a unique way to forge emotional connections with consumers. Studies show that scented advertisements can increase brand recall by over 35%.
